We continue our gastronomic world tour with Seattle… Really surprising city, almost retro-futuristic. On the program of our visit, the Pike Place walk then the Seattle Center with its stands from another world and a store which is the paradise of the amateur or professional cook…
A radiant sun was waiting for me to start my little tour of Seattle… I didn’t know that this city would turn out to be so interesting to visit. It is above all a temple of gastronomy with a multitude of restaurants and a whole bunch of stores selling kitchen equipment…
So here I am at the Pike Place market, located almost at the edge of one of the many lakes of this beautiful region.
To my surprise, this is also where the first Starbucks in the world appeared in March 1971. It is in fact the second one, because the first one was in another street until 1976, but the very first one does not exist since this date…
But let’s take a closer look at the market! Under a summer sun, all colors become bright!
The market is full of vegetables and fruits that I wasn’t used to seeing. Like these purple cauliflowers.
Many of the stands offer organic fruits and vegetables.
But also stranger things like these fruit logs, here cherry, apricot, kiwi, strawberry and peach.
For those who think the United States is all about burgers and cheesecakes, here is the perfect counter-example at Pike Place Market! A very large selection of pasta…
Stands as far as the eye can see…
And always the preserved visual of the 50s and 60s that gives its uniqueness to this beautiful city.
You’d think they were asparagus, but no… These are the garlic shoots I use in my recipe for Pork with Garlic Shoots…
And here is the elephant garlic! I bought two heads that are truly huge!
You can see it in my hand… But once cooked, the head of garlic is not very tasty. However, I cooked it in a papillote in the oven with rosemary and olive oil…
Seafood is also the pride of this city and can be found on most restaurant menus.
The legs of the ‘King Crabs’ are truly giant… Some can easily reach more than a meter in length!
In the galleries of the market, always sellers with their retro style…
I can’t tell you how nice the smell of this stand was… A delicious fragrance of roasted peanuts and caramelized cashews…
Not only the windows, but also the products they contain seem to come from another time…
Not to be put in all hands (especially mine!!) this giant teddy bear made of thousands of little candy bears!
When we come out, we can admire the blueberries but also a kind of raspberry that I did not know! Yellow or golden raspberries.
Here you go! Seeing these morels, I’m thinking of making a delicious morel risotto again soon!
For cookie lovers, this is a showcase to die for!
Here is a restaurant of ‘Chowder’, it is in fact a delicious clam juice soup with bacon, potatoes and onions, thickened by a little flour…
The look of American cakes always makes me want to smile, but I admit to succumbing easily too. And it’s another baking culture but I’m always interested and sometimes envious, like their muffins, cheesecakes and other carrot cakes…
The next day, we headed to the Seattle Center. To get there, two options. The first one is by foot and the other one is with the 1962 monorail…
Head to Fudges’ store, ‘Seattle Fudge’!
A large choice of fudges…
I’ve been saving fudge recipes since I was 13 years old. I’ll have to think about it one day even if I’m not as fanatical as I used to be!
The interesting thing about this store is that the fudge is made on the spot.
At the foot of the tower, the ‘Space Needle’, a lunch break is necessary. I didn’t have the courage to stand in line, but this booth apparently had a certain reputation!
You can find absolutely everything, like these ‘fried pies’, a kind of empanadas (recipe one day!!) filled with meat.
I loved this doughnut trailer!
And I was puzzled by this one, which sold sandwiches filled with tons of meat!
To finish, we went to the ‘City Kitchen’ store which is a paradise but I didn’t buy that many things! I already have almost everything and maybe even a little too much…

For the cookie cutters, it’s even more impressive than in the Kappabashi Dogugai market in Tokyo!
I took some of them, I have to find new shapes for the shortbread to come!
There was a section just for ice cream scoops!
The picture is very dark, but there are two or three galleries of this size in the store!
Before going back to France, a last tour in a coffee shop and its delicious pastries…
